Advancements in technology haven’t only broadened the abilities of the medical field or commercial industries. The beauty and health industry has seen plenty of new scientific and technological advancements’ benefits. Specifically, the art of applying hair extensions has come a long way in recent years. In fact, there has been a 28.5% increase in the number of U.S. salons offering hair extensions over the past two years.
Men and women use hair extensions to add volume and length to existing hair. When done by a certified salon professional, extensions can greatly alter the look of a person’s hair. Considering 40% of women show signs of female pattern hair loss by the age of 40, hair extensions are also a great option for women suffering from thinning hair.
Extensions are fused to a person’s natural hair with either heat or cold air and can cost between $300 and $10,000. A stylist determines which method will best suit a client based on a multitude of factors upon the first consultation.
The process itself can be fairly quick or can be rather time-consuming, based on the method used. With hot fusion extensions, glue is used to fuse the hair extensions to the natural hair. This process can be tedious, sometimes taking upwards of 16 hours based on the amount of hair and extensions.
However, stylists need enought time to ensure the hot fusion extensions don’t burn or irritate the client’s scalp. If the process is rushed, it can become dangerous.
Cold fusion extensions are ideal for fine hair and use a keratin-based polymer binder instead of hot glue. These extensions can last for around six months. This method is generally gentler on the scalp, but isn’t always the ideal method to apply extensions.
Clients are asked to keep in mind that hair will continue to grow at its normal speed. Consequently, it’s wise to expect necessary tightening and adjusting. When removing extensions, stylists ask clients to do so carefully as not to damage hair.
When done properly, professional hair extensions can last between three and six months, with minimal maintenance required in-between fittings. They are a great option for those with fine hair or hair that won’t grow.
