Research shows that on average, women have as many as 104 different hairstyles throughout their lifetime. Nearly one-third of women go to the salon to change their style or dye their hair following a break-up or divorce, while 17% do it to conceal gray hairs. A study of 3,000 women showed that 44% change their hair simply out of boredom, and 61% admit that they just like to make a change.
More women than ever are trying hair extensions, while others are asking their hairstylists for the new “long bob,” or “lob,” cut. No matter your hairstyle, length, or color, one thing is for certain: just about anyone can pull off Hollywood’s perfect top-knot trend.
You don’t need to go to the salon to try this sexy new look. Here are five top-knot styles you can do at home.
- The tousled top-knot
It is really very simple. All you need is a hair band, a few bobby pins, and unwashed hair. First, pull your hair up into a ponytail at the top of your head or as high as you are comfortable with. Then, twist the ponytail into a tight oblong shape. Wrap this loosely around the base of the ponytail and secure it with a couple of bobby pins. Voila! - The tight top-knot
For this type of knot, follow the same technique as the one outlined above. This time, however, wrap the hair tightly around the base of the ponytail and secure it with another hairband as opposed to bobby pins. For a sleek and long-lasting look, finish it off with hairspray. - The braided top-knot
Once again, start with the same technique as the tousled knot, but instead of twisting the ponytail, braid it before wrapping it around the base. You can construct this knot as tightly or as loosely as you please. - The half top-knot
This knot involves the same techniques as outlined above, but you will leave about half of your hair (the bottom half) down. - Double half up top-knot
If you are feeling particularly bold and creative, try the double half up top-knot for a cool twist on this easy hairstyle. This just involves two knots – one on each side of the top of the head – with the bottom half of the hair left down.
