If you’ve recently invested in hair extension services, you’re certainly not alone. Over the last two years, the number of hair salon shops offering sew in hair extensions has risen by 28.5% in response to increased demand from consumers like you.
And once you’ve gotten your new hair extensions, it’s only natural to want to keep your extensions looking as beautiful as they did the moment you stepped out of the hair salon, even though we have an average of 104 hairstyles throughout our lives. Hair extensions can cost anywhere from $300 to $10,000 — no small investment!
Maintaining your sew in hair extensions can be especially difficult during the summer, when the sun, chlorine and humidity can take a huge toll on your hair. These types of damage are much more likely to affect hair extensions, which are often chemically-treated and very delicate. Luckily, there are a number of ways you can protect your hair from the damaging effects of summer — just follow these three tips:
SPF isn’t just for skin
Did you know that you should be using sun protection on your hair as well as your skin? Don’t go slathering your regular sunscreen on your hair extensions just yet, however. There are a number of hair products available today that have SPF in them. These products will coat your hair cuticles in a protective layering, preventing the sun’s harsh rays from causing damage. Just be sure to wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo about once a week to remove any product build-up.
Reduce your hair’s chlorine exposure
We all know how dry and brittle our hair gets after swimming in chlorine pools all summer. These effects are multiplied many times over when it comes to sew in hair extensions. As a result, it’s important to avoid exposing your hair to chlorine as much as possible this summer. You may even want to invest in a shower filter, which can remove any chlorine from the water with which you wash your hair.
Give your hair a break
If you’ve noticed that your hair is having a hard time keeping up with the summer heat and humidity, you can bring it back to life with a hot oil treatment or hair masque. These treatments are great for injecting a boost of nutrients and moisture back into hair, resulting in smooth, silky locks. Use them about once every two weeks or once monthly for best results.
