Hair extension services are known for their ability to add those extra inches of length — or just some more body — to short or thin hair. With clip in or sew in hair extensions, you can have hairstyles you would never have dreamed of achieving with your own hair. That’s why they’re so popular across every demographic — in fact, six out of 10 black consumers regularly use weaves and hair extensions to change up their hairstyle.
However, hair extensions require a fair amount of care and maintenance in order to keep them looking their best. When your hair extensions look great, so will you — but many people take horrible care of their extensions!
Could you be caring for your hair extensions all wrong? Find out by looking at this list of the three most common mistakes people make every day when caring for their weave or extensions:
Brushing or styling wet extensions
It might seem like a time-saver to brush and style your extensions right after you get out of the shower. However, doing this can lead to your extensions getting even more tangled and can even cause breakage! Instead, it’s better to let your weave or extensions air-dry and then style them as you’d like.
Turning up the heat
Your extensions are just as sensitive to heat as your natural hair. That means too much blow-drying, straightening and curling will cause significant damage. Whenever possible, let your extensions air-dry. And if you can’t avoid using a flat iron or curling iron, be sure to spray your hair with a heat protectant spray before doing so.
Going to sleep with your extensions in
After a long night out, the last thing you probably want to do is take out your extensions before going to bed. Resist the temptation — sleeping with your extensions in too often is surprisingly bad for them. Your extensions will become matted and will tug on your real hair throughout the night, lessening their lifespan significantly.
